“Simon Boccanegra” is an opera in three acts and a prologue by Giuseppe Verdi. The libretto of the first version was written by Francesco Maria Piave, inspired by the play “Simón Bocanegra” by Antonio Garciá Gutiérrez. The opera was originally commissioned by the Teatro la Fenice in Venice, but was rejected at the premiere. Due to the failure at the premiere, the opera was rewritten together with the librettist Arrigo Boito and re-performed on the 24th of March in 1881 in Milan. The opera is regarded as Verdi's first step towards the musical drama. Arias are shortened and the recitative becomes the main feature of the musical theme.
