Based on the dramatic play “Don Carlos” by Friedrich Schiller, Verdi composed with the help of Joseph Méry’s and Camille du Locle’s texts “Don Carlos”, an opera which should become next to his works like Rigoletto and La Traviata one of his most famous operas. Initially written for the Paris Opera, Verdi shortened his five hour long opera just before the premiere in Paris on the 11th of March 1867, and nearly 20 years later the composer had rewritten his opera to its final form “Don Carlo” in four acts, which premiered in Milan in 1884.  Today, there are over seven versions of Verdi’s opera, but his compositions from 1884 is most often performed.
