Figaro and Susanna, servants of Count Almaviva, are about to be married. Full of anticipation, they prepare their meager chamber and eagerly await their wedding the following day. Count Almaviva, however, has other plans. He intends to exercise his right and, as was customary in the days of serfdom, spend the first night with his servant's bride. Figaro can only counter his master's lust for power with his wit, cunning, and eloquence. A fast-paced game of intrigue, mistaken identities, and disguises plunges the castle's society into delightful confusion and confusion.

Beaumarchais's comedy was already considered a political scandal in 1784. The great Austrian author and playwright Peter Turrini rewrote it radically in 1972: as a dark grotesque that leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. Turrini poses the question: What happens when comedy can no longer save us? How do we view an elite today that abuses the women under its control?

Anna Stiepani, named Young Director of the Year in 2025 by the theater magazine "Theater heute," makes her debut at the Kammerspiele of the Theater in der Josefstadt with this equally comic and relentless work.
