    • Posse in 3 Akten von Johann Nestroy
    • Couplets: Der Nino aus Wien
With his farce "Das Mädl aus der Vorstadt" (The Girl from the Suburbs), first performed in 1841, Johann Nestroy achieved one of his greatest popular successes: a turbulent and witty comedy about love, intrigue, money, and prejudice. At its center is the shrewd lawyer Schnoferl, who has his fingers in every pie when it comes to money and love. But his schemes aren't always successful, as when he interferes with the wedding plans of Frau von Erbsenstein or when he tries to advise his client, Herr von Kauz, on a theft. However, he does ensure a happy ending between the young Herr von Gigl and a mysterious embroiderer…

Nestroy's farce is a witty romantic comedy that exposes social dependencies and bourgeois hypocrisy. Dominique Schnizer, a renowned expert on Nestroy's world, will direct this classic. With a keen sense for the original, for pace and subtle undertones, he sharpens our perception of Nestroy's unerring comedy and the surprisingly timeless social mechanisms it reveals. Music and a new arrangement of the couplets are provided by Der Nino aus Wien, whose unique blend of Viennese song, "Hirschstetten soul," and poetic observations of everyday life lends the farce a contemporary feel. He will even appear on stage himself at the Theater in der Josefstadt.
