"Romeo and Juliet" is arguably the most famous love story in the world. It's no wonder that William Shakespeare's tragedy is considered the benchmark for countless love stories. Two young people from traditionally feuding families meet – no one knows what ignited the hatred between the two sides. They find refuge in love and discover it for each other at first sight. But their unconditional devotion is forbidden from the very beginning.

In his adaptation, the Swiss author Lucien Haug stays within Shakespeare's verse form and creates a contemporary version of a young, naive, and exuberant love in a world distorted by enmity and hatred. The two lovers, Romeo and Juliet, prove the existence of a boundless love that ignites both in and out of its impossibility. The romantic concept of love becomes the explosive against the hardened hostility of the older generation, for which the young lovers are even willing to die.

Director Stefan Pucher, a frequent guest at the Berlin Theatertreffen, is among others... Known for his sensual and playful Shakespeare productions, he is tackling "Romeo and Juliet" for the first time at the Theater in der Josefstadt, bringing Shakespeare's radical ideal of love, embodied by the two young characters, to the stage.
