At a dinner, the young Lieutenant Anton Hofmiller meets Edith Kekesfalva and asks her to dance, unaware that she is paralyzed. His guilt at having put the young woman in this situation involuntarily binds him to Edith, leading to a mutual dependency in which it becomes increasingly unclear who truly feels what.

Stefan Zweig's novel, published in 1939, masterfully and with emotional intensity portrays, through the inner turmoil of the young Hofmiller, the search for meaning among people in Austria-Hungary shortly before the outbreak of the First World War.
