A girl, alone in the war: Ellen's Jewish mother has fled to the USA, her aunt has disappeared, and her father has left her with her suicidal grandmother. Ellen befriends seven children who wear a star because they have "false grandparents." Together they celebrate birthdays without cakes, long for piano music and raspberry ice cream, and play hide-and-seek in the cemetery. They dream of resistance, escape, and love, while the violence draws ever closer. THE GREATER HOPE, published in 1948, is Ilse Aichinger's only novel and is adapted by Therese Willstedt. It is a war report like no other and recounts her experiences as a persecuted teenager in devastated Vienna.
