How do you achieve a happy, mindful life? Perhaps like this: keep a dream journal after waking up, meditate for ten minutes, drink a liter of ginger-turmeric water, and listen to a mindfulness podcast at double speed while doing so. Smile at your reflection while brushing your teeth and repeat positive mantras in your head. Create a to-do list with ten bullet points in five colors. At work, use the Pomodoro technique to boost productivity (while standing or sitting on a yoga ball), and practice facial yoga in the office restroom during breaks to relax. Nod at at least five strangers, clock 10,000 steps, and read 20 pages of self-help—but stay relaxed. In the evening, light a scented candle, knit, take a cold shower, and write down ten things you are grateful for. Still not happy? Then you’re doing something wrong. Manically cheerful self-help books, Instagram "purpose influencers," and life coaches make a fortune from our attempts to squeeze as much efficiency and mindfulness as possible out of every second of our enigmatic existence. But where does this longing come from? What are we afraid of? Just as she did in her bestselling comics (such as *Das Orakel spricht*), Liv Strömquist takes on the obsession with optimizing oneself to perfection—doing so with a blend of information and humor—and considers what might actually make life worth living.
