Drought, plague, and infertility threaten to destroy Oedipus' kingdom, and the city cries out: "Who is to blame?" Sophocles' Oedipus the Tyrant tells the story of a man who wants to be king. In his search for someone to blame for the epochal crisis, he exonerates himself and thus becomes a tyrant. He wanted to bring clarity to the city of Thebes and left her and his daughters Ismene and Antigone with destruction, suffering, pain, deep grief, and anger.

Nicolas Stemann, artistic director of the Schauspielhaus Zürich until 2024 and a celebrated world premiere director of Elfriede Jelinek's works for decades, is bringing his acclaimed Zurich production back to the stage at the Volkstheater. His two actresses, Alicia Aumüller and Patrycia Ziólkowska, were awarded the Gertrud Eysoldt Ring for this "brilliant theater" (Neue Zürcher Zeitung).
