A Free Jazz Performance from Another Planet
After two successful seasons of Jedermann in Salzburg's Cathedral Square, Philipp Hochmair is now making a real splash. The stage terrorist and artistic soldier, together with uncompromising, consummate musicians, takes a daring and radical look back at his life.
Inspired by his new biography, Hochmair, Where Are You?, his performance offers personal insights into his life, as well as imaginative associations with the respective performance venues. Real events blend with fiction, poetry with truth, imagination with experience. What emerges is a self-exploration, a soul-baring that allows for unexpected glimpses into the artist's life and work.
For example, during a performance in Haag, Upper Austria, the town of his childhood, his grandfather's hat becomes a voodoo gadget. At Hamburg's Thalia Theater, the costume of Puss in Boots—one of his early roles—takes center stage. And Albin Skoda's underpants become the constant companion and presumably the only great love of the multi-award-winning actor and entertainer. Not only is each performance a new experience for the audience, but especially for Hochmair himself as the protagonist.
He calls his current artistic work "lived free jazz": constantly in motion, constantly changing. Hochmair reloads himself relentlessly—stagnation is not an option. In 2026, Philipp Hochmair will once again dedicate himself body and soul to Everyman in Salzburg during his third season. An extraordinary evening with an exceptional artist: Philipp Hochmair, the beloved Everyman, presents his remarkable biography, which is just like him: unconventional, untamed, and daring, approachable yet enigmatic. A reading, an event beyond the usual parameters, in which Philipp Hochmair reveals himself in a way rarely seen.
To mark the release of his biography, the media, from Stern to Spiegel, from the Süddeutsche Zeitung to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, are abuzz with excitement. The book launch with a four-piece band is guaranteed to be no mere reading, but a whirlwind tour through his life, which above all means: through literature from Kafka to Goethe, from Kleist to the Brothers Grimm, and the Everyman he performs at the Salzburg Festival before more than 2,500 spectators each evening… a story that began at the Thalia Theater. Joachim Lux caught up with him in the summer of 2025 in Salzburg's Cathedral Square, and he immediately agreed. Hamburg and the Thalia Theater: his dream – literature his passion.

But it doesn't always have to be the grandest stage. In 2012, he gave former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt a gift and transformed his living room into a stage for 20 spectators. But that's another story; perhaps Philipp Hochmair will tell it on stage.
