Only a few days separate Theseus, the ruler of Athens, and Hippolyta, the Amazon queen he defeated in battle, from their wedding. On the same day, Hermia is to marry Demetrius, as her father commands. But in despair, she flees into the nearby forest at night with her lover Lysander, followed by Demetrius and Helen. There, the four soon enter the magical world of the elves and find themselves in the midst of the bitter marital dispute between the elf king and queen Titania and Oberon. With the help of a magic flower and the goblin Puck, Oberon plots revenge on Titania: an absurd game of confusion, with multiple partner changes, begins through the forest.
The central theme of this Shakespearean classic is the power of love, which finds its way, despite all coincidences and external influences. By skillfully combining comically turbulent scenes with musically lyrical moments, Shakespeare masterfully draws attention to the playful lightness of the extremely complex plot. Love reveals itself as an uncontrollable yet miraculous force that governs both the human world and the realm of the elves.
