The Theater in der Josefstadt, colloquially „Die Josefstadt“, was founded in 1788. It is one of the oldest theatres in Vienna in which performances still take place and is located in the district of Vienna of the same name. The purpose of the Theater in der Josefstadt was to attract guests to the inn “Bey den goldenen Straußen”. Due to the huge number of visitors, a new building was erected in 1822 and opened with the overture “Die Weihe des Hauses”, composed and conducted by Ludwig van Beethoven. Richard Wagner also conducted in the Theater in der Josefstadt, Ferdinand Raimund and Johann Nestroy worked there as poets and actors. Several premieres were celebrated in the Theater in der Josefstadt: The opera “Das Nachtlager in Granada” by Conradin Kreutzer and the play “der Verschwender” by Ferdinand Raimund, which both premiered in 1834. Another exampe is “Die Försterchristl” by Georg Jarno, which celebrated its first performance there in 1907. The program for the current season consists of the following works: “Niemand” by Ödön von Horvath, “Das Mädl aus der Vorstadt” by Johann Nepomuk Nestroy, “Heilig Abend” by Daniel Kehlmann, “Der Schwierige” by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, “Sieben Sekunden Ewigkeit” by Peter Turrini, “Die Verdammten” by Nicila Badalucco, Enrico Medioli and Luchino Visconti, “Galápagos” by Felix Mitterer and “Die Wildente” by Henrik Ibsen. Another place to visit are the Kammerspiele in der Josefstadt in the first district, which were opened as the boulevard stage of the Theater in der Josefstadt. The following plays are performed there: “Monsieur Claude und seine Töchter” by Philippe de Chauveron and Guy Laurent, “Harold und Maude” by Colin Higgins, “Die Kehrseite der Medaille” by Florian Zeller, “Lenya Story” by Torsten Fischer and Herbert Schäfer and “Arsen und Spitzenhäubchen” by Joseph Kesselring.
