Musical theatre about a life in between

    Musical Theatre from 14

Note: this production depicts topics like fleeing and daily experiences of migrants like discrimination.

What motivates me to leave my home? Who am I there and here? How does being on the move shape me?

Migrantenexpress is a participatory music theater project dedicated to questions such as these, which arise from experiences of flight and life in everyday migrant life. The project primarily examines access to personal truth - to perceived realities and to manipulated or fragmented memories. Recurring motifs emerge: speechlessness within one's own family, the search for a new self, grotesque bureaucratic hurdles and the desire for lightness, which is repeatedly overlaid by feelings of guilt.

In Migrantenexpress, an interdisciplinary ensemble meets a group of amateurs. Together they embark on a search for their identity, renegotiate their ongoing sense of belonging and share their very personal view of life in Vienna.

The music of Migrantenexpress combines different narrative forms: song and classical instrumental music meet soundscapes, pop elements and non-European sound languages. The musical level thus reflects the interdisciplinary and multi-perspective nature of the project in general and also opens up a resonance space for individual and collective experiences of migration in a sonic sense.

The starting point for Migrant Express is conversations with people who fled Iran at different times. These conversations took place in spring 2023 as part of a research fellowship that primarily aimed to understand the significance of flight and migration for the self and one's own environment. The transcribed interviews form the basis of a horizon of experience that is constantly renegotiated and expanded in the work with the participants. The focus in Migrantenexpress is therefore directly on the proximity to what was experienced and felt in reality.
