    An oeradream to ride along

Note: the ushers escort the children to their seats on the merry-go-round and cares for their safety during the ride. The ride takes 20 minutes. The merry-go-round is very slow, just about walking speed. The person accompanying the child is always within eyeshot.

One turn ... and the magic begins! The voice of the puppet Olympia rises, mechanical and brilliant. Another turn and the dwarf Kleinzach appears, dreamy and lively.

This opera carousel is an open-air experience for children and families! The magical characters from Jacques Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann are brought to life both scenically and musically, while the children experience the play directly from the carousel. This unique operatic experience will take place directly in front of NEST, the new venue of the Vienna State Opera on Karlsplatz, from September 4 to 20, 2026.

The Muse first introduces the magical world of opera with a monologue: Music, singing, painting, poetry, craftsmanship and fantasy - everything is united in her. Then the puppet Olympia appears. She is the motor of the carousel, but keeps falling asleep so that she has to be woken up with the help of the children to keep the carousel turning. The Muse mocks the Can-Can, but Olympia confronts her and helps her to sort out her feelings. Together, the characters travel to the stars in their imagination, and in the grand finale, the audience can also shake their hips to the brilliant can-can.

This carousel brings to life some of Jacques Offenbach's most famous and wonderful melodies: The journey begins with the famous coloratura aria of the doll Olympia, then takes us into the fabulous world of the dwarf Kleinzach and carries us on gentle wings to the stars in the well-known "Barcarole". Finally, we hear the popular Can-Can from the operetta Orpheus in the Underworld.

This carousel turns three times a day in front of the romantic backdrop of the Künstlerhaus on Karlsplatz. Each performance lasts approx. 15-20 minutes and is therefore ideal for a young audience. The singers are of course accompanied live by musicians from the Vienna State Opera's stage orchestra. A unique experience that takes even the youngest audiences into the wonderful world of opera in a new and playful way.
