In his seventh piano cabaret program, the musician and cabaret artist presents himself as a storyteller who eavesdrops on the absurdly comical occurrences of everyday life with all its incongruities and condenses them in the truest sense of the word. Bodo Wartke takes an exceptionally playful, linguistically and verbally acrobatic look at the phenomena of our social interactions. In doing so, he draws from the rich wellspring of the German language and, with a keen sense of nuance, unearths many a hidden gem.
Printer problems turn out to be an identity crisis of the technical device, which is stuck in the wrong body. The "egg hole," familiar from nursery rhymes, triggers a hair-raisingly absurd and simultaneously philosophical stream of consciousness in the sleep-deprived musician. And last but not least, the cabaret artist develops well-known tongue twisters into poems and short, anarchic stories, which he raps and performs with piano or cajon in various musical genres – a tongue-twister slam full of rhythm and poetry. Once again, the stage performer proves himself to be a pop- and high-culture-savvy music entertainer who samples our everyday lives linguistically and musically. Sometimes comedic in the satirical exaggeration of unbridled consumerism, presented as a rap cover of a summer hit. Or provocatively sarcastic in the parody of the bad habit of "mansplaining," here as rock 'n' roll. But it's also lyrical in a classical adaptation, where the pianist takes us up to the moon in a tender ode, subtly offering a shift in perspective in a look back.
And so, serious tones are always woven into all the lightness. The singer-songwriter reflects thoughtfully on unhealthy behavioral patterns learned early in life that can shape our existence. He critically examines misogyny and the radical interpretation of religious dogma. Yet the hopeful perspective is also present: What might our world look like if humanity's many wounds were overcome?
There will be some slips of the tongue and stumbles along the way. Bodo Wartke welcomes them, because they are part of the journey as we make our way to the point of wonder.
