Driven by their lust for power, Father and Mother Ubu murder the King of Poland and seize the crown. As rulers, they govern arbitrarily, impose ludicrously absurd taxes, and have the people executed. Overthrown in the war against Russia, they are forced to flee. They take up residence in the home of a scientist and wreak havoc in the world of the bourgeoisie. Finally, they return to France. There, they begin a new life – convinced that freedom lies only in slavery.
With the character of Ubu, the bohemian Alfred Jarry created a scathing satire on domination, violence, and ideologies. His vision shattered traditional theater. Stefan Bachmann expands the Ubu-esque universe with the lesser-known plays UBU COCK-EA and UBU IN CHAINS. Jarry's "pataphysical world" is turned upside down and becomes a grotesque reflection of our own.
