The Burgtheater, colloquially “Die Burg”, on the Universitätsring in the first district of Vienna, is the biggest German-speaking spoken theater. The Burgtheater was re-opened in 1888. Before changing location the old Burgtheater had been on the Michaelerplatz since 1748. Many literary classics like “Das goldene Vlies” by Franz Grillparzer, “Così fan tutte” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, “Herodes und Mariamne” by Friedrich Hebbel or “Liebelei” by Arthur Schnitzler celebrated their premiere in the Burgtheater. Every year, co-productions with the Salzburger Festspiele and Wiener Festwochen are carried out, many of which are invited to international theater festivals like the “Berliner Theatertreffen”. Guest performances by the Burgtheater do not only take place in German-speaking countries, countless tours lead productions to New York, Japan, Israel or former Yugoslavia. The current programme consists of a mixture of classics like “Antigone” by Sophokles or “Die Komödie der Irrungen” by Shakespeare and modern pieces like “Hexenjagd” by Miller or “Hedda Gabler” by Ibsen. Other plays which are currently being performed in the Burgtheater are “König Lear” by Shakespeare, “Pension Schöller” by Lauf and Jacoby, “Geächtet” by Akhtar, “Der Ignorant und der Wahnsinnige” by Bernhard, “Hermann und Dorothea” and “Torquato Tasso” by Goethe, “Der Diener zweier Herren” by Goldoni, “Der Revisor” by Gogol, “Der eingebildete Kranke” by Molière, “Die Affäre Rue de Lourcine” by Labiche and translated and expanded by Jelinek and “Kunst” by Reza. Discussions such as the series “Europa im Diskurs – Debating Europe” and guest appearances like “Hader spielt Hader” or the dance-ensemble “Shen Yun”also take place on the Burgtheater stage. As a part of the “Bühnen-Zauber” event, a stage equipment show, the stage of the Burgtheater is presented with pyro effects, projections, flies-dances, sound-illusions and many more special effects. The regular ensemble of the Burgtheater, consisting of e.g. Dorothee Hartinger, Dörte Lyssewski, Michael Heltau oder Joachim Meyerhoff is often complemented by remarkable guests.
