The Merry Widow is an operetta in three acts by Franz Lehár after the libretto by Victor Léon and Leo Stein. The operetta is based on the play "L'attaché d'ambassade" by Henri Meilhacs. The operetta state of Pontevedro is nearing bankruptcy. To save the state, Baron Zeta plans a wedding. The rich widow Hannah Glawari should marry the cheerful Count Danilo. But the plan seems to fail when Baron Zeta learns that the rich countess would lose her fortune upon marriage.
The Merry Widow premiered, under the direction of Franz Lehár, in the “Theater an der Wien” in December 1905, and is regarded as the most successful work of the composer. Save yourself tickets for Lehár’s masterpiece in the Volksoper Wien and book now at viennaticket.at.
