Modest Mussorgski died before the completion of his opera in five acts. In February 1886, five years after the death of the original composer, a censored version of the opera by Nikola Rimski-Korsako premiered.

Until the 1960ies the work was reworked by Igor Strawinski and Dimitri Shostakovich and the music of the opera is now considered a combination of the four composers. The story of the opera includes a tragic love story, but the motifs of the work are clearly political.
