I puritani or the Puritans of Scotland is an opera by Vincenzo Bellini and the libretto by Carlo Pepoli. I puritani plays near Plymouth in the time of the English Civil War, in which the Puritans rebelled against the royal Stuarts. Elvira the daughter of a puritan falls in love with the royalist Arturo Tablo . However, when the king's widow is brought to London for execution, Arturo tries to save her and disappears from the surface. Elvira sees this act as a betrayal.
