Giuseppe Verdis opera Don Carlos, based of Schillers libretto, premiered 1867 in Paris. Next to his operas like Rigoletto and La Traviata, Don Carlos is certainly one of his most famous works. The opera conveys, especially for the conditions in the sixteenth century, a clear message. Duke Posa, a friend of Don Carlo, longs for right to freedom of thought. This was an extremely risky demand for the time.
